Wordpress Training

wordpress logoOn Tuesday, Dec. 11th Cook County Higher Ed will offer a full day of training in the use of WordPress, a free software for creating and managing websites. If you have been considering building your own website that is easy to maintain and update, then this is the class for you.

Instructor: Don Bremer

The training will consist of two modules:

WordPress I from 9 a.m. to noon -  Create a professional looking website. Workshop includes getting a theme, adding pages, adding pictures, video, text.

WordPress II from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. -  Learn how to extend your website using plugins and widgets. Learn about widgets that help organize your work on the website and with other people. Widgets include: Notes, SEO plugins, content sliders, forums and others.

Attendance is limited to the first 15 people who sign up.

To attend, you must have a laptop you can bring to the training, or arrange to use a Higher Ed laptop for the day. We have a limited number available.

Higher Ed offers the training for the same cost and with the same instructor as it is offered in Duluth – on two separate days. By taking the Higher Ed training, you save a day and the time/expense of two round trips to Duluth.

Users of Adobe Contribute might wish to consider enrolling in the WordPress classes. Bremer says WordPress β€œis free and always will be,” is much easier to use and has many more bells and whistles than Contribute.

Enrollment is limited to 15.

November 8, 2011 - MacKenzie appointed to Governor's Task Force on Broadband

mn-state-sealOn November 8th, 2011, Howard Hedstrom, Chair of the Cook County Broadband Commission, appeared before the Board to report that Cook County Information Systems Director Danna MacKenzie was appointed by Governor Mark Dayton to the Minnesota State Broadband Task Force, which will be chaired by Margaret Anderson-Kelliher. Hedstrom commended MacKenzie for being appointed to this commission, stating that it would also be a direct benefit to Cook County to have her involved at the state level regarding broadband issues. MacKenzie reported that the appointment was for 2 years, and she will report back to the County Board during that time regarding various issues. Following discussion, motion was made by Hakes, seconded by Martinson and carried to express the County Board's full support of the appointment for 2 years, and authorizing said work to be done as a part of MacKenzie's county job duties.

October 11, 2011 - 4 New Broadband Commission Members Appointed

courthouseOn October 11th, 2011, Danna MacKenzie reported to the County Board the County Broadband Commission currently has five vacancies, due to the recent restructuring of the Broadband Commission Ordinance that expands the group from 5 to 9 members, and the recent resignation of Scott Harrison as a member. MacKenzie advertised the commission openings to the general public and received s everalapplications. The Commission recommended that the following applicants be appointed to fill four of the vacant two-year terms on the Cook County Broadband Commission: Pat Campanaro, Paula Sundet Wolf, Jack McDonnell, and Jim Boyd. Following discussion, motion was made by Martinson, seconded by Hakes, and carried to appoint the four applicants to the Cook County Broadband Commission as recommended.

October 25, 2011 County Board Approves $4M Grant to Arrowhead Electric

ArrowHead-FooterLogoOn October 25th, 2011 the Cook County Board of Commissioners awarded Arrowhead Electric $4 million to be used to build a fiber optic communications network throughout Cook County. Below is the excerpt from the County Board Minutes:

 

The County Board reviewed the grant agreement between Arrowhead Electric Cooperative, Inc. and Cook County, Minnesota for the $4,000,000 grant that Cook County was giving AEC from the 1% Local Option Sales Tax Fund to assist them with their Broadband Initiative Program. Tim Scannell, County Attorney, was present for this discussion and reviewed the agreement. Representatives of Arrowhead Electric Cooperative, Inc. were also in attendance. Scannell reported that all parties are comfortable with the document and recommended that the County Board approve it as presented. Following discussion, Commissioner Martinson moved the adoption of the following resolution and upon seconding by Commissioner Hakes was adopted by unanimous yea vote of all members present.
